The FDA has expanded the label for finerenone (Kerendia) to include adults with chronic kidney disease associated with type 1 diabetes, making it the only non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) indicated for CKD across both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
In the supporting trial, albuminuria fell early and durably, with placebo-adjusted reductions in urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio of roughly 22% at three months and 28% at six months, a marker associated with slower kidney disease progression.
The expansion gives nephrologists another disease-modifying option for proteinuric diabetic kidney disease, a population that has historically had limited targeted therapy.
